Girls 5th, boys 11th at first Overton meet

LAUGHLIN - The Lady Cougars were the best of the small schools, finishing fifth with 66.5 points, and the Cougars were 11th of 16 with 21 points, at the Richard Lewis Invitational meet at Moapa Valley High School on May 2.

The Silver and Blue was set to close out its 2009 season on May 8 at the Pirates' oval and pits, competing in the Grant Bushman Invitational track-field meet in Overton.

Once again four seniors led the girls of Coach Ben Fermon and assistant Debbie Brody in scoring at Moapa.

Ariana Hardy won the high jump by four inches at 5-ft., 4-in. and the long jump by a half-inch at 16-ft., 6-in. She also finished second in the 200-meter dash by .17 of a second.

Jessica Gnadt was second in the 300-meter hurdles and sixth in the 100-meter hurdles. Brenda Cortez took sixth in the 1,600-meter run. Jeri Lynn Brody was fifth in the shot put.

LHS scored in all four relays (unit members were not listed) taking fourth in the 1,600-meter baton race, fifth at both 400 meters and 3,200 meters and sixth at 800 meters, never more than seven seconds from moving up a notch.

Also entered were Kay Van, Jasmine Brown, Alexandra Condray, Ashley Barton, Kim Benavides, Amanda Fantaro and Marissa Peters.

For the boys Cody McGeshick was second in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs, less than two seconds from winning first, with Kristopher Suhr taking eighth place.

LHS also finished fifth in the 3,200-meter relay (unit members were not listed) and was entered in the 1,600-meter relay.

Also entered were Corey Cook, Jackson Walton, Nick Maldonado, Robert Burkett, Jacob McGaw, Jaime Voelker and David McNutt.

After opening a seven-meet schedule at home on March 13, the teams journeyed to Bullhead City twice, Las Vegas (Faith Lutheran), Indian Springs and Overton twice.
