Big Bend State Recreation Area now on winter hours
LAUGHLIN - The Nevada Big Bend of the Colorado State Recreation Area at Laughlin is now on its winter schedule for the day use area. The gate will be open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. seven days a week.
The 24-space full hook-up recreational vehicle park is open 24 hours a day.

Town board advisory council training offered today
LAUGHLIN - The annual Town Advisory Boards-Citizens Advisory Councils orientation, open to the public and the Laughlin Town Advisory Board's four standing committees, will be held from 2-4 p.m. today, Oct. 14, in the meeting hall of the Clark County Regional Government Center on Laughlin Civic Drive between Casino Drive and Thomas Edison Drive.
Each year the Clark County staff provides training on ethics, the open meeting law, voting issues, roles of the liaison and secretary, and land use planning and zoning.
Town boards make zoning case recommendations to the county planning commission and/or commissioners.
The liaisons are for the other townships, as Laughlin is the only one with a township manager. Some areas use the advisory council instead of a board; members of both types serve at the pleasure of their county commissioner.
Lowden announces run for Harry Reid's seat
HENDERSON - Nevada businesswoman, philanthropist and former State Senator Sue Lowden, a Republican and an owner of the Pioneer Hotel-Gambling Hall in Laughlin, filed her legal papers on Oct. 1 with the Federal Elections Commission, officially entering the campaign for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Harry Reid of Searchlight.
Lowden, the immediate past-chair of the Nevada Republican Party, said she will begin raising funds and building a grassroots organization to provide new accountability to Washington.
Lowden also issued an opening statement at the Nevada State Museum in Henderson. She recently appeared at the Laughlin Economic Development Corporation meeting with State Assemblyman Dr. Joe Hardy and hosted a lunch for him afterwards at the Pioneer.
Mall store sponsors clothing drive
LAUGHLIN - The Bass store in the Preferred Outlets at Laughlin is hosting a clothes drive through Saturday, Oct. 31. Bring all donations to the store in the mall on Casino Drive.
All donations will go the Colorado River Food Bank's Community Clothes Closet for those in need. Those who donate will receive a coupon for Bass, Van Heusen and Izod.

Civic Drive included in Casino Drive project
LAUGHLIN - The rebuilding of Laughlin's main street, Casino Drive, also will include the repaving of a major connector street, Laughlin Civic Drive, from Casino Drive to Thomas Edison Drive.
The work will involve milling up a portion of the pavement and replacing it with new pavement on the street that serves the soon-to-be opened Colorado River Food Bank-Community Clothes Closet, the new Silver Rider bus yard, the Clark County Regional Government Center, the Community Resource Center and the main fire station.
Rotary sets rummage sale for Oct. 23-24
LAUGHLIN - The Laughlin Rotary Foundation will have its annual 24-hour rummage sale Friday and Saturday, Oct. 23-24, in the parking lot in front of Aldape's Market on the Needles Highway. The sale will begin at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, and closes at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24.
Donations can be dropped off at Laughlin Storage on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 8 a.m.-noon.

Medicare election begins Nov. 15
TRI-STATE AREA - The annual period during which Medicare recipients may change their annual plan and their Part D prescription coverage will be from Sunday, Nov. 15, through Thursday, Dec. 31.

Concert to benefit scholarship fund
BULLHEAD CITY - A benefit concert, Fires of Wisdom, will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 27, to help establish a Larissa Castilleja Scholarship Fund and to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving.
Castilleja was a Mohave High School teacher who was killed by a suspected drunk driver while riding her bicycle on Sept. 9.
The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Mohave High School Auditorium and will feature local artist Carrie Williams.
Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for students. Additional donations will be accepted. Tickets will be sold at the door starting at 7 p.m. Checks should be made out to Mohave High School, with a memo “Larissa's fund”. Call Williams at 928-542-9099.
Garage sale to fund nursing scholarships
TRI-STATE AREA - The Student Nurse Organization of Mohave Community College will host its annual fund-raiser, a garage sale that will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Bullhead City campus on Saturday, Oct. 17, and on the Lake Havasu City Campus on Saturday, Oct. 24.
Signs at the colleges will direct persons to the sale location on each campus. Proceeds will help fund scholarships for nursing students. Donations will be welcome and arrangements can be made for pick up of small items by calling Cindy Jones at 928 758-3926, ext. 4651.
Quilters will do patriotic piece
LAUGHLIN - The Spirit Mountain Quilt Guild will make patriotic quilts at the Laughlin Branch of the Las Vegas-Clark County Public Library from 10-a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17.
The guild will meet at 6 p.m. the first Thursday of each month at the Spirit Mountain Activity Center's senior citizens wing. Guests are always welcome.

Bennett Fall Fest ticket prices announced
LAUGHLIN - Ticket prices for the annual Fall Fest of the Parent-Teachers Organization at Bennett Elementary School have been announced at 50 cents each.
All 15-20 carnival-style games, face painting, sand art, music, raffles, hamburgers (barbecued by the Colorado River Food Bank), nachos, popcorn and soft drinks will be available by multiple tickets.
There will be a 100-ft. haunted hallway. Raffle tickets for fine dining and gift certificates from many stores in the Tri-state will be sold. PTO President Doug McGeehan said there will be a few surprises.
All the proceeds will go to pay for things the students and teachers need. This year the parent-teacher group switched from the PTA to the PTO to allow more money to go to the school.

LAUGHLIN - The Veterans of Foreign Wars Laughlin Post 243 will serve its next fund-raising spaghetti and meatball dinner, which includes a salad and garlic bread for $5 a plate, from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at the American Legion Laughlin Post 60 on Bruce Woodbury Drive a half-mile east of the Needles Highway.
In November, the dinner will be held the third Wednesday of the month, Nov. 18, due to the following Wednesday being the day before Thanksgiving.

LAUGHLIN - The 22nd annual Laughlin Chefs' Food Fest, a Laughlin Chamber of Commerce fund-raiser for local and regional charities, will begin at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at the Aquarius Resort-Casino's Pavilion.

Community Church appreciates pastors
LAUGHLIN - The congregation of Laughlin Community Church will honor Senior Pastor Gene Lee and Associate Pastor Marilyn Meyer with a potluck picnic on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 1 p.m. at Mountain View Park.
And at the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. worship services on Oct. 18, the Pro-Teen group will present a custom-written skit, skipping its regular 1 p.m. meeting to help honor the two pastors.

Library Friends seek books for annual sale
LAUGHLIN - The Friends of the Laughlin Library need donations of unwanted books for the organization's annual fall book sale, which will be held the first weekend of December, with the actual day to be decided at the group's Monday, Nov. 2, meeting at 4 p.m. at the library.
Hardbound, softbound and paperback books, children's books, dictionaries, encyclopedias, tapes, CDs and DVDs may be dropped off at the library on the Needles Highway at Las Palmas Lane, just above the U.S. Post Office.
The Friends are an independent chartered non-profit organization that assists the local library to obtain needed or wanted items not covered by the district budget.
Join Operation Christmas Child
LAUGHLIN - Laughlin Community Church once again will participate in the annual Operation Christmas Child shoebox program, through Nov. 15.
The boxes are hand-delivered to children all over the world who are suffering because of natural disaster, disease, war, terrorism, famine and poverty. Typical contents include toys, personal necessity items, school supplies, candy and hand-written notes of encouragement.
In mid-November, upon completion of the international project, the church will begin its local drive, the Laughlin Giving Tree.
Miss Teen workshop will be Oct. 24
LAUGHLIN - The deadline for local girls ages 13-18 to enter the Miss Teen Laughlin Pageant will be Dec. 31, but a free workshop will be held Saturday, Oct. 24, in Las Vegas.

Driving class
LAUGHLIN - An AARP safe driver program will be presented at the Clark County Regional Government Center on Laughlin Civic Drive between Casino Drive and Thomas Edison Drive on Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 14 and 15, from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Cost for the class is $24. AARP members will receive a $2 discount when they present their AARP membership card.
The course is designed for drivers 50 years and older. Senior citizens over age 55 may receive a discount on their insurance premiums upon completion.

Cougar Cubs run at Kingman
KINGMAN - The Laughlin Junior High School Cougar Cubs cross country teams competed at the Kingman Invitational on Oct. 6.
Christina Velliodis won as an individual for the second week a row, according to Coach Lori Petrik, besting 52 other girls in 11:52 on a 1.5-mile course.
In the boys race, eighth-grader Anthony Escarzaga finished fourth in 10:30, Alex Norris 27th in 12:42 and Mike Manke 37th in 13:36.
Southern leagues meet in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS - The Clark County School District's South East Career and Technical Academy will host the southern leagues cross country long distance running championships of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association on Saturday, Oct. 17.
It will be a warm-up for the southern league regionals, with Laughlin High School hosting Classes 2A (including Class 1A) and 3A, with the 2A meets at 10 a.m. (girls) and 11:15 a.m. (boys) on Friday, Oct. 30 at the Cougar-Lady Cougar 5,000-meter (3.1 kilometer) Mountain View Park-Bennett Elementary School course.
In Class 1A-2A, the top two southern teams and the top three individuals from the other schools will advance from Laughlin to the championships Nov. 7 at Reno.
AIA need winter sports officials
TRI-STATE AREA - The Arizona Interscholastic Association is in urgent need of individuals interested in becoming basketball officials and the AIA now is accepting applications to officialte basketball games.
The annual mandatory rules clinic for basketball is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 19, at the Lake Havasu High School Room 101.

LHS schedule modifications
LAUGHLIN - Here are the latest Laughlin High School fall sports schedule changes, according to Athletic Director Ben Fermon.
Football - The Silver and Blue will play Hurricane, Utah, Diamond Ranch a second time this season, at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, for the varsity homecoming. The previously scheduled junior varsity 4 p.m. game with Sandy Valley High School's varsity in Cougar Stadium remains as is.
Volleyball - A new match has been scheduled at Indian Springs High School on Oct. 20 with the JV match at 4 p.m. and the varsity match at 5 p.m.
Softball tourney will be held Nov. 13-15
LAUGHLIN - A Bash for Cash softball tournament, featuring four levels of diamond action, will be held Friday-Sunday, Nov. 13-15, with an entry deadline of Monday, Nov. 2.
The National Softball Association event is being sponsored by the eight Casino Drive resort members of the Laughlin Tourism Commission, offering $25,000 in prizes with the top 10 teams each receiving money. The Men's D and E Divisions will split $15,000 equally, with $10,000 to be split evenly by the 16-inch and Co-Ed Divisions.
