Veteran's Day ceremonies announced

LAUGHLIN - This year's Veterans Day ceremony will be held at the Flag Plaza of the Fisherman's Access Park on Casino Drive just south of the Laughlin Bridge next Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m.

American Legion Laughlin Post 60, Post 60's Auxiliary and Veterans of Foreign Wars Laughlin Post 243 once again will combine forces to conduct the ceremony.

Following the ceremony, there will be a hosted lunch at the American Legion post hall on Bruce Woodbury Drive between Thomas Edison Drive and the Needles Highway.

Services Fair Nov. 5

LAUGHLIN - A community resource information opportunity will be held from 11 a.m. to noon at the Laughlin Branch Library by the Social Services Committee of the Town Advisory Board.

The library also will host a disability employment fair from 1-5 p.m., put on by the Nevada Disability Advocacy-Law Center, the Centers for Medicare-Medicaid Services' Health Care Financing-Policy Division and the Nevada Governor's Council on Developmental Disabilities.

Both are free and the public is invited, with lots of information and an opportunity to meet with representatives of organizations that can serve Laughlin.

Panel meetings listed

LAUGHLIN - One of the Laughlin Town Advisory Board's four standing committees has canceled its November meeting and moved up the date of its December meeting to avoid convening the day before Thanksgiving and two days before Christmas.

The Community Development Committee will meet at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 2.

The Social Services Committee will meet at 8:15 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12, and Dec. 10.

The Parks-Recreation Committee will meet at 9 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 16 and Dec. 21.

The joint Public Safety+Public Works Committee will meet at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17, and Dec. 15.

All the meetings will be in the Clark County Regional Government Center on Laughlin Civic Drive between Casino Drive and Thomas Edison Drive.

Attempted robbery suspects sought

FORT MOHAVE - The Mohave County Sheriff's Office is asking the public's assistance for information about an attempted robbery which occurred outside of a business in the 4500 block of Highway 95 late in the evening of Tuesday, Oct. 20, in Fort Mohave.

As an employee of a business was about to leave in his vehicle, another vehicle rammed his vehicle's rear bumper. A man wearing a bandanna approached the driver's side door and demanded money, pointing a gun at him. The victim immediately closed and locked his door.

The victim reported the weapon may have been a pellet gun.

The suspect was accompanied by two other persons who also were disguised. Their vehicle was described as a SUV type, possibly gold in color, four-door Honda or a Mercury.

The suspect was described as a white male with a shaved head with brown hair, approximately 5-ft.-9-in. tall and weighing around 140 pounds. He was wearing a black short-sleeve shirt with white markings on the front, dark pants and a blue bandanna.

Cops warn about telephone scam

MOHAVE COUNTY - The Mohave County Sheriff's Office is warning the public of a new telephone scam.

The victim, a Kingman resident, reported receiving a telephone call about a relative being in jail and needing money. The victim wired $3,186 to Quebec, Canada. The victim later found out that the relative was not in jail and never requested money to be wired.

Those who suspect fraud are asked to contact their local law enforcement agency.

Patriotic quilts will be finished Saturday

LAUGHLIN - The Spirit Mountain Quilt Guild will meet Saturday, Nov. 7, at 10 a.m. at the Laughlin Branch Library to finish its patriotic quilts.

Normally the guild meets at 6 p.m. PST on the first Wednesday of each month at the Spirit Mountain Activities Center's west (senior citizens) wing in Mountain View Park.

Laughlin's got talent

LAUGHLIN - Laughlin's town-wide employee talent show finals will be Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. in the Tropicana Express' Pavilion Room. Admission will be canned goods or a $5 donation to Laughlin's Colorado River Food Bank.

Thursday Bible study time changed

LAUGHLIN - Due to the change from Pacific Daylight Savings to Pacific Standard Time, the Thursday night Bible study at Laughlin Community Church being conducted by Roger Scalice has been moved up to 6:30 p.m. each week.

He currently is going through the Gospel of John in the New Testament. The public is invited.

Scalice and his wife Janet were welcomed on Oct. 25 with a potluck lunch after he preached the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service.

Brown Bag Book Club announces plans

St. John the Baptist Church sets schedule

LAUGHLIN - Here is the schedule for St. John the Baptist Catholic Church for Nov. 4-10. All times are PST.

Religious education classes will begin on Sunday, Nov. 20, with the First Communion session from 9:30-11 a.m. and the Confirmation session from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

St. John's Guild - Thursday, Nov. 5, at 1 p.m. and every first Thursday of each month.

Filling stockings and packaging supplies for our troops will be Thursday, Nov. 5, 5-5:30 p.m. at the church. Donations are still being accepted.

The Knights of Columbus officer's meeting will be Monday, Nov. 9, 6 p.m. at the church.

Congressional candidate to visit Laughlin

LAUGHLIN - After hearing from Clark County Coroner Mike Murphy in November, the next speaker for the public Laughlin Leadership Forum of the Laughlin Economic Development Corporation will be Rob Lauer, seeking to unseat first-term Third District Congresswoman Dina Titus.

Coin, currency, stamp show returns Nov. 6

LAUGHLIN - An international coin, currency and stamp exposition returns to Laughlin Nov. 6-8, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday in the Mardi Gras Ballroom on the lower level of the Colorado Belle, 2100 S. Casino Dr.

Millions of dollars in gold, silver, platinum, currency, stamps and collectibles are offered; plus free appraisals and cash purchases by dealers. Hobby supplies, postal history and memorabilia will be available.

Students get newsletter

LAUGHLIN - Students at Bennett Elementary School have published a newsletter called the Bobcat Prowler. This is the second year for the writers, editors and photographers to do so.

Editors-in-chief are Lillie Haffey and George Leatherman. Leslie May is faculty advisor. The staff includes Summer Swale, Brett Berdie, Nikki Lindsey, Nicole Petrich, Dylan Boland, Teri Carter, Mary Smith, Carlos Durazo Valdez and Dominic Majalea.

LAUGHLIN - Bennett Elementary and Laughlin Junior-Senior High will recess on Wednesday, Nov. 11, for Veterans Day; Thursday and Friday, Nov. 26 and 27, for the Thanksgiving Day holiday.

Medicare enrollment blitz will be Nov. 17

BULLHEAD CITY - A Medicare enrollment blitz will be held from 9 a.m. to noon MST on Tuesday, Nov. 17, at the Mohave County Branch Library on Trane Avenue near Hancock Road.

It will allow senior citizens to compare Part D Medicare prescription plans, enroll in Part D (and avoid expensive penalties the government imposes for not signing up in time), compare and enroll in health maintenance organizations or preferred provider organizations.

Those attending should bring a list of their medications (including the size of the dosage and how often it is taken).

In 2010, the deductible will increase from $295 to $310 and the initial coverage limit before the “doughnut hole” where patients have to pay the full retail costs of the medications will rise from $2,700 to $2,830.

New Hope Hospice offers memorial angels

BULLHEAD CITY - New Hope Hospice, which serves the Tri-state Area, is selling memorial angels to be displayed on their Christmas tree which will be paraded down Hancock Road in Bullhead City on Dec. 4.

Memorial Angels will be available for sale through Dec. 1.

The Colorado River Women's Council will host the 10th annual Boombox Christmas Parade that day, beginning at 6 p.m. New Hope Hospice will participate with a float with the Spirit of Giving theme.

Anyone may purchase an angel; their loved one's name will be placed on the ribbon. Sales of angels will be directly used to purchase food and toys for the local community in connection with parade.

LAUGHLIN - The annual fall sports award ceremonies will be conducted on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at the Laughlin Junior-Senior High School cafeteria, at 6 p.m.

Football Coach Jason Leonard, volleyball Coach Eliza Candelaria and cross country Coach Lori Petrik and their staffs will award Cougar and Lady Cougar letters and pins.

Teams can practice starting Nov. 14

LAUGHLIN - The Cougar and Lady Cougar wrestling and basketball teams can officially begin practice for their winter season on Nov. 14, according to the rules of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association.

Athletic Director Ben Fermon expects to announce schedules soon. His wrestlers will compete in Class 2A and will be eligible for post-season honors. The boys and girls basketball teams will compete as independents for the second consecutive year.

Softball tourney to be held Nov. 13-15

LAUGHLIN - A Bash for Cash softball tournament, featuring four levels of diamond action, will be held Friday-Sunday, Nov. 13-15.

The National Softball Association event is being sponsored by the eight Casino Drive resort members of the Laughlin Tourism Commission, offering $25,000 in prizes with the top 10 teams each receiving money.

The commission has not yet announced a location.

LAUGHLIN - American legion Laughlin Post 60 will host a meal for Monday night's professional football games.

Trout to be stocked

LAS VEGAS - The Nevada Wildlife Department has begun its annual trout stocking program and expects to reach Lake Mohave just above Laughlin two days before Thanksgiving.

Trout are to be stocked at Lake Mohave every other Thursday beginning Dec. 10.
